What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?

DAZE Short Film

Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.

Khari Brooks is part owner of “Club Daze” and loves his single life until he is caught in a daze of deja vu and wakes up repeating Saturday like “Groundhog Day” meets “How to be a player.” Although, when I started writing this film I was grieving the loss of my father. The main character and I connect because we experience functional depression.

Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?

Spike Lee and Tyler Perry inspired this film. For years “School Daze” has been one of Lee’s most influential films. In addition, Perry uses his comedic plots to have teachable moments.

What is the goal of the film for you?

The overall goal is to entertain and enlighten the audience, but also shed light on grief and trauma.

What has the journey been like getting the film into production?

I initially faced the challenge of getting support from family and friends. I almost felt discouraged, but I stayed focused and believed that God would make everything possible. Before I knew it, Marlon Christie offered to invest and Executive Produce the film. Although, all while in pre-production I suffered from severe anemia and iron deficiency. I had to have two blood transfusions and four iron infusions, all before filming. I ended up having a myomectomy after we wrapped filming.

One thing you learned from this project?

I learned to focus on the things within my control because life is too short and every day is a chance to do better.
