Better Know An Author – Johnnie Bernhard
Our weekly spotlight series on authors from around the world. This week we sat down with Johnnie Bernhard!
Please give a brief introduction, including your name and where you are based
I am a traditionally published author of upmarket fiction. I spend my time between coastal Mississippi and Central Texas. As a former English teacher and journalist, I’ve been in love with stories and storytelling since a young girl.
What book or books have you published or are working on at the moment?
I have published four novels with a university press: A Good Girl (2017), How We Came to Be (2018), Sisters of the Undertow (2020), and Hannah and Ariela (releasing August 1, 2022).
What drives you to write?
I love exploring the human story–what connects all of us regardless of geography, race, and religion.
Where can folks find you online and on social media?
Look for Johnnie Bernhard on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Also visit me on my website at www.johnniebernhardauthor.com
What is one piece of advice you would give to another author out there who might be struggling?
Believe in your story! This is a very tough industry with a lot of rejection. You must be strong and know your writing is worth reading!
What are some of your five-year goals with writing?
I teach a lot of craft classes for writing centers across the country. I love it. I hope to continue doing so. I am also working on a manuscript. I hope to continue meeting readers and writers, enjoying storytelling, and writing fiction.
Final Thoughts?
Writing a novel has been my dream since a young girl. It is hard work and often lonely work. What makes it all worth it is a reader enjoying what I’ve written. It’s the sweet spot! My books can be found at indie bookstores, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and at www.tamupress.com
