Bad Girls Review

Bad Girls is a 2021 feature film from Director Christopher Bickel, written by Bickel and Shane Silman.

If you are even a passing fan of grindhouse cinema of the 70s than this is the film for you. From the very onset Bad Girls is not here to toy around. From an electric opening sequence to a chaotic ending, and in line with the many of the beautiful cars showcased throughout the gas does not let up.

I will openly admit that films like Planet Terror or Death Proof are not my instant go to choices for a movie to watch on a Friday night but Bad Girls makes me want to rethink that. Bickel and his team have at once managed to pay beautiful homage to those schlocky films of yesteryear while also pushing the genre forward. However, do bear in mind this is a mature film that I would say is not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

About mid-way through the film has to be an amazing stand out sequence for me personally. A drug fueled evening gives way to some of the most visually enticing frenetic camera work I have seen in a film in a long while. I absolutely adore the way in which Stephen Nemeth was at once able to encapsulate a vintage look while also utilizing modern sensibilities with his camera work. The sheer scope of balancing all of this while still making a cohesive film should be applauded.

As for the writing if you enjoy one liners this film has got you covered. If I was to take the time to list all of them, we’d be here far too long but I will say I think my favorite moment comes early on in the film when a pair of young lovers are making out in a sweet car in the woods. As the guy is trying to score with his girlfriend, she stops him short remarking that she has a test in the morning. He comments back saying he has a test of his own in Sex-Ed, I had to pause the movie I was laughing so hard. Moments of this quick wit come through in spades all throughout the film.

The cast of characters deserves a special mention too. Bard Gainesworth, Zerox Rhodesia, Danny Lucifer, Valinda Washington, Mitzi Anne Chandler, Carolyn Hills, Rusty, Special Agent Cannon, and Special Agent McMurphy are all names that you will remember long after the credits roll. Watching Dove Dupree as McMurphy always eating throughout made me laugh and also made me worried that he might have had a DiCaprio with sushi moment on set. Our three female leads as portrayed by Morgan Shaley Renew, Sanethia Dresch, and Shelby Lois Guinn all turn in excellent performances. I have to highlight Guinn of the three for her understated but quirky performance especially as by the end of the film I wish I was able to see more from her throughout. This is a hallmark of a good supporting actress though so this is by no means a complaint.

I could ramble on and on about the great qualities of this film but I will leave it at this. Bad Girls is a movie worth your time because it is a movie not out to waste your time. It kicks it in high gear right from the start and never lets up. Whenever and however, you get the chance to sit down with it please do because you won’t be disappointed. I can not wait to see more from Bickel and his entire team and I hope I am lucky enough to get the chance to see more of his work.
