Vigil Review

Vigil is a 2021 short film Directed by Adrian Simeone with Cinematography by Alex Clegg.

From the very start Vigil wastes no time catapulting you into its dystopian world or one which at this point would not surprise me is based off a true story. All terrible humor aside Vigil is a great showcase for the filmmaking talent of Simeone and his team.

The action in this short is done very well and the editing to match is great. It takes excellent inspiration from films like John Wick or The Raid which it takes a lot of care to do well. This is a team that obviously has a lot of love for action films and has taken considerable time to do their own action scenes.

The cinematography by Alex Clegg really shines through too. In utilizing a single location, he is able to punch up this neon-soaked style that really adds to the atmosphere of the film. It was a cool aesthetic and one that hooked me from the beginning.

The camera movement was fluid and I am always impressed by how much good camera work and solid editing can be harmonious in creating believable and great paced action.

One of the last pieces that I would like to touch on is the sound mixing. This is something that a lot of independent filmmakers can at times struggle with or just suffer from not balanced audio at times. However, this is another solid area in this film. The crunching bones and hits work great, balancing well against the score and audible line delivery. So, a far round of applause for doing well there.

My final thoughts would be to give Vigil a view. At under 4 minutes long it isn’t going to eat up any of your time and all. You will be glad you got to spend a little bit in this dystopian action thriller. I’d love to see more stories out of this world that has been built. I’m genuinely excited to see more work from Simeone and the team at Late Night .99.
