You’re the Puppet Review

You’re the Puppet is a 2020 short film written and directed by Michael Charron.

A clever and amusing semi-dark comedy that provides plenty of depth in its characters and world building, You’re the Puppet is just an all around fantastically paced short film.

From the very beginning, what is easy to recognize about this film is the high level of production value on display. Clearly, a large group of creatives with a strong skill set is working to make a solid piece.

The writing and dialogue are all natural and believable, with impressive sets utilized throughout. Charron even brought on a set of writers specifically for the comedy bits, with help from Adam Hrabik, Ashley Overton, Chadwick Smith, and Pat Dean. This just goes to further illustrate the care that was brought to the film.

Of course, at a face value inspection there is an easy comparison that is noticeable by any passing observer to the most recent adult orientated puppet film The Happytime Murders (2018) but this is strictly coming from the fact that both films feature puppets as main characters. Outside of this it is only worth a passing mention, as this short is unique in its own identity.

The acting in the film is perfect across the board with the standout being of course lead Erik Anderson who pulls double duty as Laramie and Leonard. He brings a deep layer of quality in both roles, giving unique sensibilities to each character.

Serial

To sum up this is just simply a well-polished, well executed short. The cinematography from Steven Gunter was excellent, the music from TW Bond fit every scene like a glove, and even the end credits have some fun nods to what is on the horizon for Laramie and Leonard. An enjoyable short from start to finish that will not disappoint.
