The Caravan Review

The Caravan is a 2021 animated short film written by David Willows and animated by Dave Low.

A true triumph of storytelling that will lift your spirit and melt your heart, The Caravan is a quietly powerful film that delivers in every emotional aspect it sets out to guide you through.

What is arguably the most striking aspect of this short film is the amazing way it slowly builds up so many unsuspecting elements in the story. So many little fragments that at first seem appropriate but perhaps a little strange all slowly makes sense. In the end it all comes together in a beautiful, albeit softly reflective way.

Dave Low who provides the animation presents it in a comic book fashion that is minimalist yet stylized. It strikes a great harmony by never being too distracting or overbearing. It provides a perfect mix to the narration in the story, always elevating everything.

At only five minutes this film is a quick watch but has you completely invested in the narrative. For never seeing a face to the characters on screen, we should applaud at how connected you will be by the closing moments. Willows has truly crafted an excellent self-contained story here, and he does an amazing job with his narration throughout as well.

Serial

Overall, The Caravan is one of those special short films that will leave you with plenty to reflect on. It feels so much more relevant in a post pandemic world too as so many of us are exploring in our own bubbles on the open road with RVs. It is just the reasons as to why we have changes in our lives that can be the deepest and darkest parts of our lives.
