Briar Review
Briar is a short film written and directed by Pearls Daily.
Dripping with a melancholic Lynchian style, Briar showcases amazing talent from lead actress, writer, and director Pearls Daily that is sure to leave a lasting impact after the credits roll.
Opening with a seamless transition from an old black and white television set to full on pro mist infused visuals, this piece immediately sets an off-beat tone. It is one that is darkly funny, reminiscent of the aforementioned work of David Lynch because it is not played for laughs but catches us by surprise in such a way that we can’t help but at least lend a chuckle.
From there the tone is quickly rotated a fully 360 degrees into sheer dread as we see the full murderous rampage our lead Briar Hughes has hiding deep inside her. What transpires from there is a short that has an amazing style with a story that provides a lot of credence to our main characters’ motivations.
One of the connecting threads that really brings the short together is the cinematography work that comes to us from Arthur Woo. He is clearly having a great time painting the scenes in rich, vibrant colors while also striking a harmony with more traditional lighting schemas. There is a significant amount of range on display throughout.
Another aspect that brings many pieces together is that of the score composed by Conrad Clifton. It is pitch perfect and has an amazing style as well, providing just enough cues to keep us engaged with every new scene.
Of course, without solid acting, everything falls apart, and everyone in the piece does amazing. Our lead Pearls Daily really carries the show, but there are some amazing supporting turns from Maine Anders, Abe Goldfarb, Anna Bridgforth, and Jonathan Burwell here as well.
Overall, Briar is a short film dripping with style and substance all at once. It is definitely worth your time and a great showcase for all the talent both in front of and behind the camera.
