Memories Review

Memories is a 2020 music video produced, written, and directed by Jeremy Vella.

For all those searching for an 80s inspired vaporwave synth nostalgia trip, your prayers have been answered in the form of Memories.

There were a lot of smart decisions made in this music video for Ben Bailey’s song Memories, with the first being not to take itself too seriously. In doing this as an audience, we can really let our guard down and just enjoy the incorrect correctness on display in this reimagining of what an 80s style bowling alley would be like through the lens of modern-day aesthetics.

Through this we get some tender moments of somber reflection that a man has looking back on love lost. Even through the cheese on screen, we still felt for the plight that is on display. There is some genuine heart here that can’t be denied.

One thing that holds the video back a bit is that some moments felt a little elongated, lasting a beat or two past what they should. Of course, on one hand we can attribute this to time limits with shooting differing set ups or limitations that the current pandemic may have on the amount of people on set. Whatever the case, there were parts that just remained on screen a touch too long personally.

Outside of that, the remaining technical aspects are great here. With the cinematography styling of Clive Brincat on display, infusing some great color splashes to each scene, it heightens the amazing wardrobe choices by Emma Asciak.

Overall, this is a catchy track with a fun stylistic music video. The entire team was not only having fun but also creating something that is a great call back to a decade that we will never soon forget.
