The Legend of Santa Review

The Legend of Santa is a 2020 short animated film written by Daniel Colyer and directed by Andrew de Burgh.

There is a storybook whimsy that is perfectly captured in The Legend of Santa which will leave you reminiscing about wonderful holiday moments gone by.

Animation is one of those powerful mediums where it seems like the sky is the limit in how and in what way you can tell stories. While of course the same principal holds true for all artistic mediums, there is just something about animation that can really warm the soul.

Even the biggest jaded Grinch will find something to appreciate about this short film. A tale of the venerable Santa Claus, as if being retold to us by a child on the night before Christmas.

The speed of the animation may be a little slow for some, but it is so perfectly storybook in its style that it grows on you as you watch on. Much like what it would be like to read a storybook, we can fill in some of the animated gaps, so to speak, which just opens it all up to the animation.

This is something that could and should easily be on anyone’s holiday watch list in winter. Without a single word spoken, it will carry you all the way through without missing a single beat.

There truly needs to be more films like this that really evoke what it means to be a kid again, and to carry a beautiful sense of imagination. It is why films such as the Fleischer stop motion holiday specials have been able to stand the test of time year after year.

Serial

This is an easy film to recommend, naturally and especially around the holidays. It is a heart-warming short that is sure to leave you with a small on your face, and maybe even with a tear on your cheek.
