Hereditatem Review

Hereditatem is a 2021 short documentary directed by Dean Evans.

It is amazing to think about how many artists in this world have come and gone with no one ever seeing their work or knowing who they are. Imagine if you will that one of those lost artists was in your family, having created work for a lifetime, only to discover it after they pass. Hereditatem explores one such story as told by Max Rudd, who discovers not just his father’s writing but his grandfather’s too.

The core strength of this documentary is at the feet of this tale of discovering what is almost a complete secret from you about your own immediate family. It is easy to connect with Rudd in his journey to share the work his father and grandfather created with the world. Not only that, but that Max himself is a writer as well, makes for a fascinating look into a family filled with generations of creativity.

Director Dean Evans does a wonderful job of editing this story together in a cohesive way that frames the story well. Nothing seems out of place, and the momentum is just right during the entire runtime.

The only subjective piece that was a little distracting was the overlay of the dust particles in a few of the shots. They seemed a little heavy in frames which took away a bit from the images. The voiceover by Evans as well here does also take a few beats to grow on you, but once it does it creates a pleasant flow throughout.
