Here Comes the Wolf Review

Here Comes the Wolf is a 2021 short film directed by Julie Rohart.

A gorgeous and minutely detailed short story set against the backdrop of World War II, Here Comes the Wolf marries high production values with deep character moments from start to finish.

Simply put this a wonderfully executed short film from top to bottom. The visuals from cinematographer Lous Bergogne are absolutely beautiful, managing to push through an almost exclusively night time set film. Nothing feels underexposed or hard to see at all, it is balanced so well throughout.

The period of WWII is portrayed with fine detail, of course, in keeping with a short film the correct decision was made to maintain a smaller scope, being set in mainly a single home location. With the ability to focus in on a home in the woods, the ability to dress not just the locations but the characters in period accurate detail is wonderfully managed.

With that an enormous debt is owed to the production director Marion Teboul and the costuming by Aurelie Zajakala and set decoration from Chloe Monguillon. They all did a stunning job with the help of a wonderful crew.

The angles and camera movement comes across so naturally and effortlessly with some wonderful editing keeping the pace just right.

If there is any bit that could be potentially leveraged against the film it would be with the final act of the film, which feels a tad bit rushed. While an overtly satisfying conclusion, it seemed perhaps a bit forced in its execution.

Bearing that in mind everything else on display here is wonderfully done, no stone seems to have gone unturned in making the production value stand tall.

That is not even in mentioning the acting which across the board is spot on from every single member of the cast. Even the wolf…yes there is an actual wolf in this film!

Serial

Overall, Here Comes the Wolf is an easy film to recommend, not just for the stunning level of quality on display but also the well-paced story told. While as mentioned the ending may prove a touch divisive for some, it still concludes the piece nicely and elects for a pleasant end to our main characters plight. Check it out if you haven’t already had a chance to.
