Secret Within the Sphere Review

Secret Within the Sphere is a 2021 feature film directed by David Noble.

A steampunk adventure that has the highest ambitions, Secret Within the Sphere attempts to bring big budget entertainment on a micro-budget which brings about very mixed results.

To have high aspirations is always going to be commendable, especially with a smaller budget feature film. To its credit this film provides varied locations, and a story that is always moving forward.

The problem really lies first in the special effects used throughout. They are serviceable but could still use a lot of work. Again, the attempt is admirable but the execution just lacks a real sheen.

Next would be the audio/music in the film. The score feels a touch overstuffed, not allowing for moments to just breathe, and the audio mixing itself is rough around the edges. Sometimes the dialogue comes out low while others it sounds hollow. It never really brings about any consistency.

As for the editing in the piece, shots seem to linger a beat or two too long, feeling a bit padded in their length to extend out the run time. It feels like what we are getting is the moment the camera rolls and stops, rather than trimming off some of the edges on either side of a take.

Diving deeper, the acting seems to be another piece of the film that is a minor hit or miss. While we get a lot of supporting characters, some do better than others with their moments on screen. It almost feels as if we are watching a first or second attempt at a scene. In one instance toward the very end of the film too we get a bit of line stumbling from one of the leads that feels like it should have been caught on set, not making it all the way to the final film.

Serial

Again, this is a film trying to go big, and it is amazing that an attempt was even made. The amount of love and community support that went into the production is very obvious but the results are simply lacking in the end. Secret Within the Sphere tries to find a place with bigger budget films and what we get has entertaining moments but beyond that still needed some polish through it all.
