Lately Review

Lately is a 2021 music video directed by Jeremy Vella.

An ode to summer love and summer loss, with visuals that perfectly capture the musical emotionality on screen, Lately is at once a solid music video and listening experience.

It is fitting that the timing of sitting down with this music video would be the weekend of Labor Day here in the States. Our unofficial end of the summer elevates this experience from one of a reflection of those amazing summer flings to looking back on a summer season that is giving way to fall.

The sidebar of personal melodrama out of the way, there is one piece to this music video that is always a bit of a back-and-forth debate internally. Having characters talking in a music video/silent film with no subtitles or hearing the conversation with a music video. The tendency here is to fall on the side of not being a big fan of it, but I could see where it wouldn’t bother anyone viewing either.

Outside of that, though, everything else here works really well. The atmosphere, the characters, the wardrobe/makeup all are nicely packaged together. That house party vibe is well represented.

In addition, the cinematography is executed great too, lending itself to that hazy summer afternoon look.

All the connecting pieces are here and the song is a great earworm jam from Ben Bailey. A track sure to be in any summer rotation this year and also perfect for those warm nights of existentialism that can come with this season as well.

Serial

Overall, Lately is worth the time watch and listen to. The pairing of Ben and Jeremy in both visual and musical mediums has paved the way for some grand projects. It will be nice to see where their creative endeavors continue to take them!
