My Best Worst Adventure Review

My Best Worst Adventure is a 2021 feature film directed by Joel Soisson.

A unique locale helps to keep things somewhat fresh in this fairly predictable coming of age story. My Best Worst Adventure has a sweetness to it, but an inconsistent tone keeps it from reaching higher.

While there might not be a lack of kicking us into the story of a rebellious teen being transported to her extended family in Thailand, the problem from the onset is a lack of feeling too connected to our main protagonist. With her intentionally mute ways, it is hard to connect in the first act of the movie in particular.

While of course, as her motivations and temperament are broken down as the film moves forward, this slow reveal will prove to be more of a test rather than an earned victory for most audiences.

What is great about the film is the true uniqueness of the location which is used to impressive effect and the quality overall of the production. There is some standout dolly and crane shots as well as effect slow motion cinematography in parts. While it keeps things moving along nicely, it does also ring a little hollow, as certain moments don’t seem as necessary as others.

Thailand is a place that is rarely seen in movies and it is great to see it used as a true breathing ecosystem rather than just as a backdrop. There is no pandering going on or simple hollow use for the sake of it being less utilized in other films.

What the film really needed was a stronger bit of empathy for our heroine to begin with and then setting up more of our secondary characters quickly. Overall, it just doesn’t resonate as much as it could be the way it is all put together now.

Serial

My Best Worst Adventure certainly wins a lot of points for the unique setting and amazing use of those in Thailand, but without those elements at play, there is simply not enough here holding it all together. Too many small things hold it back from greatness despite having a big heart at its core. This was one going in feeling like it was going to be an indie charmer, but just didn’t come together in the end.
