After a depressing month of not watching anything in September worth mentioning, October became a busy time of moving watching. It was unexpected, but very welcome. So I hope you enjoy reading through the films I saw this month and might feel inspired to share your own movies you enjoyed seeing, if so leave a comment below.

Titane
The month began with a true bang with the film Titane. If you know anything about the movie and the premise of a woman being impregnated by a car then you know how bonkers this one can get. I enjoyed this one a lot and would highly recommend it. Although I could easily see someone just writing this off as dumb, which it is not by any means. Just not for everyone.

Suicide Squad
Much better than the 2016 version of this film. This new adaptation does certainly try a little too hard in spots to be edgy, but tells a solid story in the process while making you care about characters that in the wrong hands could have easily just been poorly implemented.

Annette
A musical unlike any that I have seen in a long time, if ever. Annette is certainly an experience but one that I didn’t enjoy as much as I thought I would. The musical numbers never hooked me and everything just felt a little offbeat. That is probably intentional but it just never fully connected here.

No Time to Die
A solid send off for the Daniel Craig era. No Time to Die certainly delivers on the spectacle but has some glaring story issues. Plus, the chief complaint of a less than stellar villain holds true. It gets close to the highs of previous installments but just doesn’t quite get there. See this one in theaters though if you can.

Lamb
This might be a controversial take, but I really didn’t enjoy Lamb all that much. I think the major problem comes down to the marketing on this film which sets it up as horror which it is not by any stretch. This is more slice of life than anything else and maybe if my mindset had been pushed in the polar opposite direction, I could have enjoyed it more.

My Best Worst Adventure
A film that certainly has heart to it, there is just not much else to really connect with. It had a lot of potential, but it just doesn’t come together. Read my full review here.

Choir Girl
This one is dark and brooding. Choir Girl is a black and white trudge through the muddy underbelly of crime, drugs and sex. It is a film that is well executed but also alienating. Check out the full review on this one here.

Let the Wrong One In
If Shaun of the Dead met Dracula, this would be the result. A fun horror comedy that gets a lot of mileage out of a small budget premise. Saw this as part of the Newport Beach Film Festival and had a really good time with it. Easily recommend this one to seek out if you can.

The Green Knight
A classic fable told in the most eloquent way, The Green Knight took some time to grow on me, but by the end I really enjoyed this film. I was a little apprehensive at first, given the more big budget style this one carried being an A24 film, but I’m glad I let that go to watch it. Wish I would have seen it in theaters, but another easy recommendation from me.

Last Night in Soho
Edgar Wright brings his usual flair to this horror/mystery/thriller film, but it is not his strongest work. Still tells a solid story and has all the usual twists and turns any good mystery should have. It did not blow me away, but I enjoyed this one too, if only for the amazing 60s set pieces most of all.

When I’m a Moth
This film completely wastes what could have been an interesting premise seeing a young Hillary Clinton as a fishmonger in Alaska before starting college. What we get though is a boring and inconsequential film that sets no stakes for itself and just instead focuses on three main characters listlessly reflecting on life with visuals that look good but can’t come anywhere close to salvaging anything.
