It Came from Below Review

It Came from Below is a 2021 feature film directed by Dan Allen and written by Scott Jeffrey and Dan Allen.

Providing an adequate amount of tension and dread but not quite enough character development, It Came from Below keeps a solid pace but will leave you finding little to care about in the characters throughout.

As the introduction says, this is a solidly made film with some good visuals and well-done set pieces, but just doesn’t have enough to go off of from any of the characters featured. Even our main protagonist, as portrayed by Megan Purvis (convincingly enough) has little more than a threadbare arc of wanting to redeem her father’s tarnished legacy.

The rest shown on screen are little more than slices of archetypes that we have seen in horror films before. However, the flip-side to this coin is that you don’t go into a movie like this expecting any kind of Oscar level drama either. You are here for some intense moments and some nice bits of gore.

On that note, then you won’t be disappointed. Well, mostly. While yes, the film could exhibit more gory moments and take the time to showcase more of it throughout, it still does a decent enough job of keeping those looking for it satiated.

While the middle act of the film is certainly the strongest point, the third act completely crumbles. Diving back into the cave for one last rescue moment this time with more victims to kill the reasoning really takes a nosedive, culminating in an ending that really doesn’t provide a satisfactory feeling, even in the realm of the bad ending for a good character sort of way.

Serial

Overall, It Came from Below makes for a nice late-night watch, especially with friends, but it won’t be a film that you will revisit more than once. While the gore and creature (when shown) are well done enough, nothing brings this one above that world of the B-Movie tier that for all intents and purposes has a certain place in films as a whole.
