MisFitSized Track 2 Review

MisfitSized Track 2 is a 2020 extended short film written and directed by Fan Campos.

Made with a lot of love and care that shines through each scene, MisfitSized Track 2 certainly has a solid place in the world of extended Jem and the Holograms media, but can’t avoid the pitfalls of attempting to bring the film to life in live action.

Fan films are always tricky to make. Not only do you naturally have to be a fan of whatever you are adapting to the film world, but you also have to keep in mind the opinions of all the other fans who share in your passion.

For this short film, a solid balance is certainly achieved here. On one hand, there are some moments of more dramatic tension, but on the other you see a film that isn’t taking itself too seriously either.

Coming from the world of fan made pieces too, there is a lot of production value on display. In the outfits, the locations, the large cast, etc. There is a lot to see on screen that truly goes for a larger budget feel. Perhaps, though, this is where things should have been scaled back a bit to focus on a smaller scale story within the Jem and the Holograms universe.

It is always a treat to see something that isn’t attempting to fit itself into an established world until close to the very end. Think of a more recent example like the film Split, which kept things close to the heart until the very end. This is just food for thought aside for any filmmakers out there thinking of telling interesting stories while also sticking to their own beloved mythos.

Serial

In the end, MisfitSized Track 2 doesn’t offer too much to those outside of the fandom, but it has a lot for those who are knowledgeable in the fan space. It is filled with all the trials that will keep you entertained throughout.
