Repossession

Repossession Review

Repossession is a 2021 feature film directed by Goh Ming Siu and Scott C. Hillyard.

Missing the mark in the genres of both drama and horror, Repossession moves brings together a repetitive story that takes too long to introduce any true demonic forces and never takes time to explain much surrounding them either.

So, to backtrack a bit on that previous statement. Yes, the story gives flashbacks to the demonic possession subplot of the story but raises questions it doesn’t really have answers to. To have some spiritual force haunting for the sake of haunting feels a touch anticlimactic and does nothing to make things interesting. Instead, it could be easily said why even bring that question up in the film in the first place?

Outside of that we have a family drama of a man who can’t face that fact that he has lost his job, instead only telling his closest friend. This story beat of inner turmoil just pushes on for far too long to even get to a revelation of finally confessing.

This extension of plot beats throughout is a consistent motif that really only feels like padding for the film to hit a feature length runtime in spots. The nature of cycling between talking with his friend, going home with his wife, and trying to face his own truth is one that takes up most of the film. Our demon doesn’t even make a first notion or appearance until about 45 minutes in. For a film that clocks in at an hour and a half, this is just too slow of an initial reveal.

When we reach the conclusion, you can look back and see a lot of moments that were pretty inconsequential to driving the plot forward. Small interactions that felt really hollow or just didn’t add up to much at all by the time the credits roll.

Serial

Repossession is trying to walk a line between drama and horror, never quite landing in either genre effectively. The beats of the story become much too repetitive and while the visuals of the film are nicely maintained, nothing can really save a story from becoming a touch dull throughout. It doesn’t quite scratch that itch for fans of either space, and with that it comes harder to recommend in any instance.
