Ikarus

Ikarus Review

Ikarus is a 2021 short film written and directed by Shaun Escayg.

A visual feast with production value to match the large vision, Ikarus keeps the story moving at a clip even if there is a heavy video game spectacle influence at times.

Echoing off of that opening statement this feels like a long-lost cinematic compliment to the opening introduction of the best video game you’ve never played. This is not an insult by any stretch either, as the production value on display here never holds back one bit.

The problem with many short films or DIY projects that attempt to create a post-apocalyptic world is they immediately tend to go on the smaller scale of things. So, the fact that this film does not shy away from showcasing this futuristic world is a breath of fresh air in a subgenre of films that is pretty saturated, to say the least at this point.

Add to that really strong cinematography from Oliver Milne with some amazing locations being utilized throughout and you have a solid short film to enjoy from start to finish. As the action grows too, it is a treat with some solid stunt work and gore effects on display as well.

The sound mixing and score only compliment everything that much further. Making the atmosphere so much more vibrant. The audio does not have any hints at over-modulation or any of the audio getting lost in the thick of things.

There isn’t really a question of whether or not this short is worth your viewing time, but rather how much there is to take in from it. This is one to sit down to more than once for sure just to really admire all the care and craft that went into everything.

Serial

Again, Ikarus is one to easily recommend and if you do get the chance to watch it, then you are in for a treat.

This film was screened as part of the AFIN International Film Festival.
