Harvey

Harvey Review

Harvey is a 2021 feature film directed by Ranelle Golden and Johnny Alonso.

Wondering along with a pace that often feels all too aimless, Harvey is unable to find solid footing, mainly from what feels like an abundance of miscast characters.

If there is one thing that this film will push during its entire runtime, it would be the notion of the suspension of disbelief. It feels like an exercise in trying to take characters and story beats seriously while either poor acting or scenarios just don’t work to support the film as a whole.

While the broad strokes for what should make a movie watchable are there, the small pieces only work to alienate the audience. Moments of over acting, actors that just don’t fit their roles, a lack of motivations, and visuals that are just too bland all hurt the final product.

Even naming the film after our lead character feels wrong simply because, throughout much of the film, he is shown as more of a secondary player to an overall larger story. It is strange decisions like these that leaves the viewer more confused than compelled.

Perhaps taking this character out or focusing more on the characters who actually seem to push the story forward would have worked better. Maybe having a larger cast with quirky people from this small town would have helped. All this said to just really say that it needed more than what was shown.

Serial

Harvey comes as a film that is hard to recommend because of the slow pace, characters that really don’t develop and a story that just goes along with no sense of direction. While there are attempts made to showcase a larger budget, it doesn’t elevate what is a forgettable story overall. This is one that just needed a bit more time in the oven to cook.
