Eyes Upon Waking

Eyes Upon Waking Film Spotlight

Today’s film spotlight focuses on the feature film Eyes Upon Waking directed by Timothy Zwica.

What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?

“Eyes Upon Waking” is a phrase taken from a poem written specifically for a character in the film, as a means of expressing conflicted emotions. When they “dare to look life in the eyes upon waking,” they have the choice to face their existence even though they might prefer to end it.

Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.

The story follows a very distressed woman into a mental health facility following two attempts to end her life, and examines her growth into a still-troubled person content to continue living. Much of the story, the characters, and the stories of the characters comes from the personal experiences of the filmmaker.

Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?

“Little Miss Sunshine” is a personal favorite, especially for the way it combines humor with tragedy. This two-fold approach was very much in mind throughout writing and production.

What is the goal of the film for you?

To reach an audience who may connect with the experiences and emotions of the characters, to convey how these things are common and acceptable: it’s okay to feel these things, and okay to talk about it.

What has the journey been like getting the film into production?

This has been a long haul since I self produced. Basically, I would raise money and then shoot some of the scenes over 2013, 2015 and 2019. Our biggest challenge was finding our main location. We were so fortunate to have the community pitch in by donating food, wardrobe, props and furniture for our production design. Not knowing much about producing going in, I have come out with such great schooling and knowledge.

One thing you learned from this project?

It is imperative to find people who believe in the film and its purpose, equally so as things like funding and secured locations. The positive energy provided by a great cast, crew, and everyone supporting the film is a huge part of what made this project possible.

How can folks find you and your film online?

Right now we are in the film festival circuits. To see a list of our screenings and more information on our film, please visit our site at: www.eyesuponwaking.com or our IMDB page.

Any last pieces of advice for fellow filmmakers?

Make the film you want to make. Listen to advice that works, ignore any that changes your intentions. When your project has a vision, others will join who share that vision. Never compromise artistic integrity, always compromise pretty much everything else.
