Filmmaker of the Week Ranelle Golden

Filmmaker of the Week – Ranelle Golden

Episode 52 of Filmmaker of the Week featuring Ranelle Golden!

Give us a brief introduction of yourself, where you’re from originally and where you are now if different

I was born on WPAF in Dayton Ohio but grew up mostly in Florida. Always end up back in Florida, even after having lived from coast to coast.

What is it that first got you into the world of filmmaking?

I had been writing and went to film a short based on a feature as a POC and my hired Director didn’t show up.  I had the benefit of my Director of Photography telling me I should direct, and he would show me the ropes.  He did and over a decade later here I am with tons of projects completed as a director, writer and producer.

Share a little bit about your specialty in the film world

First, I am a screenwriter. That’s where my passion and training lie, but I’ve been producing a long time and directing since 2009.

What has been your most challenging project to date?

Perhaps HIDE, it was inspired by a very dark childhood experience. It was hard to write it, but then directing it was definitely difficult at times.  Thankfully we could come out of the scenes to laugh and enjoy other moments on set.  Revealing that much about my life in such a raw way was both healing and triggering.

Tell us a bit about your latest project.

I’m about to head into my biggest film ever. But there’s not much I can say publicly about it yet, though the budget is there, and the pre-pro starts in the fall. We are also working on a film slate of three films and getting some interest from investors.

What is one moment you’ve had in any part of the filmmaking process where you learned a really valuable lesson?

When I was working with a director of photography to explain the workflow, I talked about blocking plots and shot lists. They said I could do whatever I wanted if it made me feel better, but they wouldn’t utilize it. In that instant, a huge light bulb went off in my head. A learning experience for sure.

What are some of the 5-year goals for you as a filmmaker/creative?

Since 2019, I’ve worked on three films that have gone into distribution, and several series up on Amazon as a writer, and producer/director for one of them. My 5-year goal is to have my first theatrical release, and to produce at least 1 feature per year.

If you could work with one idol of yours, who would it be?

Since I’m a writer first, I would love to work with George R. Martin.  The worlds he builds fascinate me.

Name three films that have inspired you most in your journey.

I love all film. This is hard one.  But I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter, and the Marvel Films.  There isn’t any one film, that I have watched over and over again to inspire me.

Any last thoughts or pieces of advice to filmmakers out there?

My best advice is DO. Don’t just talk about it. Every step, even a baby step is still a step to making your dreams come true.  I always say DREAM IN ACTION.
